What we love about Asphalt 6: Easy on the wallet, looks great, various multiplayer modes, automatic image tilting as you steer
What we hate about Asphalt 6: Steering can be difficult in the beginning, very easy to get your car wrecked
Price: $0.99 (iTunes) | $6.99 (Android, BlackBerry) | $0.50 (Nokia)
Our recommendation: While Infinity Blade trades at $6.99, and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit sets you back by $9.99, Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD offers similar graphical prowess but costs just a dollar. That’s a full featured multiplayer-sporting game for Rs. 50! Highly recommended.
When smartphones were first equipped with accelerometer sensors, the potential for its application in gaming was obvious. And the genre that would use it best? Racing, of course! It got even better with the advent of tablets, which feel like a steering wheel in the hand. And with the hardware becoming speedier by the day, games like Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD look incredibly slick. These are the kind of graphics a normal PC rendered a few years back.
Asphalt 6′s features are similar to the standard set found in most racing games today. The game is centred around the career mode, which enables you to progress through the game. With each race, you earn cash, and up to five stars by completing the primary objective (i.e. finishing in the top three), and certain secondary objectives. While you can use the cash to buy cars and upgrade them, stars let you progress in the game by unlocking new races and leagues.
Leagues are analogous to different difficulty levels. Starting with the ‘Bronze League’ the competing cars get faster with each race and league. You can keep pimpin’ your ride with upgrades for its engine, handling and nitrous. However, you’d eventually need a new one when your current car cannot match the competition any more. A balance is generally needed between the two approaches here. Once you have unlocked cars, you can take them for a spin in single races in the ‘free ride’ mode.
You can steer the car by simply tilting the tablet. The car accelerates automatically, however, you can brake by touching the left part of the screen. Touching the right part of the screen fires the nitrous boosters, which fill up slowly as you race. You can also fill this nitrous meter by collecting nitrous packs on the track, or by performing drifts.
The driving in Asphalt 6 is drift-happy. It is easy to get the car to drift with just a caress of the brake, and the drifts can also be maintained for long distances. It reminded us a lot of Need for Speed: Carbon.
The multiplayer mode is also quite impressive, with the game allowing games both locally and over dedicated servers. A local game with your peers can be played over a common Wi-Fi network, or by using ad-hoc Bluetooth connections.
One of the cons of Asphalt 6 is that it’s very easy to get your car wrecked. It is frustrating when you are in a winning position and an ordinary car in traffic wrecks your nitrous-fuelled monster. But there’s a good side to this – wrecking your opponents is also pretty easy. And immensely satisfying!
With most accelerometer-aided racing games, we have often felt a bit irked that you end up seeing a tilted image. Imagine your monitor tilting as you steer a car on your PC – it’s distracting! Asphalt 6 overcomes this problem by turning the image in the other direction, making the car look horizontally level as a result. It’s a small tweak, but the effect it has cannot be understated.
Asphalt 6 HD is a brilliant racer at the price of peanuts. The multiplayer mode can keep you hooked for hours. Our only concern is the initial learning curve associated with steering control in this game. But then again, it’s an all new way to drive!
